Not waving but drowning

Good Morning Lovely Readers and the hugest of welcomes to new followers sbmillesfeuilles, Sooze, Jo, Ileana and Pickle-Lily.... great to have you on board. Please do let me know if you have a blog so that I can follow you too (If I haven't already found it).

Now do you know this poem by Stevie Smith?

Not Waving But Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.
Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.
Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

This is how I have felt since coming home from Canada. All out-of-sorts. Unable to settle to much at all. Really not sure why. My brain has even felt dead when it comes to blogging .... no inspiration.

I have been pulling the house apart. It doesn't work as it is. It is a strange house... a detached house built in 1966 with a weird lay-out and no storage space! We Mr Thrifty bought it for the location and I have spent the last 5 years trying to make it work as a family home. If we had money we could extend but just for now it has to work as it is. So (yes, you guessed it) I have been de-cluttering again and trying to figure decent storage into every room. Moving furniture, changing rooms around and generally getting into a mess!!!

This is what I did to the kitchen last week..

See what I mean? Anyway, please be patient and I'll post the "after" photos.

Tell me, do you get times when you are all at sixes and sevens with the world? How do you shake yourself up? I'd love to know..... am feeling like a bear with a rather small brain right now!

Have a wonderful day and I WILL get around to reading blogs - I promise

Love Mrs Thrifty

  1. Hello:
Sometimes the world does seem to be rather topsy turvy and one yearns for order from the chaos. There is nothing better, we find, when faced with such a state of affairs than to reorganise the furniture, clean out the cupboards and drink tea.

  2. Just take your time, Hun. I feel exactly like that when I come back from our holidays in Brazil. Out of sorts for quite sometime.
Do one things at a time and it will wear off. :)

  3. Oh, lovely lady: it takes time. Be gentle to yourself. I am certain you will spring back to normal over the summer weeks.

Perhaps, I should shyly let you know that I have a handful of hares to sell as from today. No obligation of course! Taking a peek at them might cheer you up a wee bit.

    Warmest wishes from France.

  4. Oh my dear! I have been where you are. Last summer I attacked every room and closet. It was daunting when I would go to bed with tables and counters (and the floor) covered in clutter (I can't stand clutter), but once I made it through the sun was shining once more. My mantra...bird by bird. When all is said and done you will be so pleased.

  5. We are in exactly the same position as you are now. My brain is addled with so many renovations to plan and budget for (budget?...who am I kidding, there is no budget).

  6. I know what you mean about 'fuggyness'... do you think it's the weather?
Hopefully you are enjoying some of today's sun.

  7. I like your kitchen with all the pots and utensils hanging up. Looks nice and lived in. Hope the brain clears soon.

  8. I had to smile at your photographs - that is exactly the kind of thing I do now and then, although I try not to do it during hot weather! Some inner demon drives me to empty everything out and forces me to sort through it. When I was younger I would drag furniture from room to room trying various arrangements. Sometimes I would have to drag it all the way back again when I found the original way was the best way. It was always deeply therapeutic, if somewhat exhausting.

Maybe you are now looking at things with 'new eyes'. Be gentle with yourself.x

  10. How lovely to return twice to your little corner of the world. I do like your blog! I have just returned from a glorious bicycle ride in the evening sun along the Loire river. I just read your sweet comment on my blog. I think, I'm afraid, Mademoiselle Fruit Rouge has already gone. If you didn't get there in time I PROMISE there are more hares coming. I have so many ideas buzzing around my head and there will be another one or two in the next week. I will post about them on my blog, of course. I hope your eyes are better now.

I am giving you a virtual hug. Bonne chance avec le rangement de votre maison.

    1. Sorry I deleted my first message!! I think you sound to me as if you are jet lagged, when we come back from a trip to America we feel like that, almost foggy brained and I think that s probably how you are feeling too. I hope the decluttering helps clear your mind as well as your house. We are about due a decluttering session too but I cant get my head into gear yet. Keep your chin up and I'm sure things will get better soon.

  12. I am feel like I am always back paddling ... too much stuff, too little time & energy, never enough time, money and energy to have it the way I want. As Debby says, you are not alone. We are always looking for our "happy" place are we not? "Shucking" is tearing the leaves from the cob to the corn. xxx

  13. My kitchen looks just like yours at the moment! Do I need 20 vases (Ok- they are all different...)Sorting out the cupboards and filling up charity shop boxes....I always feel a bit dis-satisfied when I am back from holiday..."wish I was still there syndrome"????

  14. I love being on the road, so returning home after a holiday makes me feel very unsettled!

De-cluttering is always a good thing, hope you enjoy it!

  15. You sounds like I feel, maybe it's the weather, the getting away for awhile and then having to return to 'normal'. It will pass (she says touching wood and crossing her fingers) I hope for us both.

De-cluttering is always good, I have my fingers and toes crossed for this good weather to last until the weekend so I can do a car boot sale, our truck has been loaded up ready to go for three weeks now, surely this week we will be able to empty it.

I can't wait to see the 'after' pics, but don't forget to enjoy some of this glorious sunshine, the kitchen will still be there when the sun has gone.

  18. I almost always give up midst declutter. I find it hard to let anything go. My dining room table looked like your third before picture. It's clear now. But only because everything has been moved to my bedroom!

  19. Dear Mrs. T,

I live in a small space and count myself fortunate to be a constant de-clutterer. Between the humidity and verging on things menopausal, I do empathise with your fogginess. Patience, it will clear and best of luck with the de-cluttering!

  20. Hello Mrs Thrifty,
I hope you haven't succumbed to the de-cluttering rampage you are on at present. Mind you I could do with going on such a rampage here in my place. I really don't know how we accummulate so many things...!

  21. Oooooh dear, hope you are feeling a bit better now. I kind of have had a similar slump, my sister and kids were here in Cyprus with us for 2 lovely weeks, but the moment they left I just felt so low and totally unfocussed and out of sorts. Anyway to take my mind off things I have spent quite a number of confused hours getting my first blog sorted, put you on my blogroll and have just made my first post, way to go! Am jealous, I want all my kitchen stuff on the wall like you have, but Other Half who built our house refuses to put hooks in his perfect walls lol - men!
